Mark, great setup for quarantine! How far from the other cages do you keep the quarantine aviary? also, how long do you place them in quarantine? I usually aim for 4 weeks, but sometimes it is much less...........like 0 days

With the amount of breeders over here we're careful who it is that we buy off. We have some great friends in the Central California Avian Society and we have no trouble taking their birds and putting them straight with ours.
The best advice I can give you guys is to use common sense. If you don't like what you see then don't buy. If you do buy QUARANTINE is the best way to go. Be observant and notice any changes in the demenour ( Spelling again?) appearence etc. If the bird appears lethargic get it to an avian vet ASAP

Thanks for the Advise Justin as i think only about 10% of people Quarantine there new birds !!! And in some cases it is a MUST do !! You're welcome Mate. It's important. we get a bit relaxed about it here. Alot depends on who it is we're getting birds from. If we're buying birds from someone we've known and trusted for years then we don't really do it. From someone we're not sure of then it's definately quarantined. Most over here push for a 90 day quarantine period. Plus all kinds of gram stain's, full blood counts, Culture tests on fecal matter, and everything else. Which is fine if you can afford the $1500 - $ 2000 most vets would probably charge for all that.

Your looking like your shaping up to become one of the biggest bird breeders on the east! glad I know ya already Thanks Peter Well Peter i do have very high goals when it comes to birds but i wont to take a few people to the top with me!!! EG: Some members in WA, one person in NSW and 4 people here in Queensland (people that are good friends or have helped me out in the past in one way or another) As I really enjoy helping others and only a snob / A** hole would do it alone (my opinion) I have met a LOT of big breeders through out Qld and NSW and at least half of them slag each other out and it some times it puts me off buying birds from that person even if I really wont them. If they worked together it will become a stronger hobby and a stronger market to deal in. Even now the government is NOT helping us at all ! As ALL EXOTIC BIRDS in the country are ILLEGLE unless you can prove there province back to Legal importation I just would like to work out some sort of hand shake agreement between us that we will all scratch each others backs and help each other to become well known breeders in time with good reputations and FANTASTIC birds to buy !

I agree 110% mate!
Of the biggest breeders, some are quite rude, and act as if their own sh*t dont stink. Matt and I have had some extremly upsetting and dissappointing dealings with people in the bird "industry" but have also been extremly lucky to have had lots of help and support from some people. When we were younger some people had taken us under their wings as such and really helped us out. I really appreciate it when people do this, so now we try and do our bit with people we know are good aswell. I like helping out people more my age with birds and stuff, who have less to their name and get a good head start in the hobby. Maybe there will be the winds of change blowing if we stick at it and make our way to the top.......hyacinths here i come

I can not say i have has the same help i had a guy in sydney (Blacktown Birds and Pets) he was the only guy in sydney that helped me (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) he did not know much about breeding as all he did was buy and sell but if he though the bird was not 100% or out of my league at the beginners stage he would not sell it to me and then advise me on wot I should choose from. When we moved to Queensland we met a guy and we bought 3 pairs of green cheeks off him well 1 cock killed the hen then the cock had a fit 4 months later and died The remaining 2 pairs did not even lay an egg and these birds were bought as proven breeders Then we heard about a new bird club that had only been around for 1 year so we decided to join and give it a go and it was good as members are more than willing to help you (well most of them) But i have had more help and advice here on OZ PETS than any where else! I have met a couple of good nice big breeders here in QLD but most of them just care about them self. I have also learnt a LOT from reading lots of books on birds and just looking at wot the big guys do instead of asking them as when i asked most of them all i got was Bull SH*T. I tend to learn from my own mistakes and other peoples as everyone else does!!! One Day WE WILL ALL Get there with each others HELP
