Someone or something killed one of my quails One of my silver hens, tried to rip its head off my quess is it was a cat as in the aviary is only budgies and tiels and both are pretty placid. So im going cat hunting!!! I normally like cats but when they are in my yard going after my birds i cant be nice

It was probably butcher birds or kookaburras as there are a lot in your area and I use to loose a lot of finches to them all the time in the past!!! They just get too close to the wire in the aviary and the butcher just stick there beak through the wire and attack them There beaks can be up to 2 inches long!!!

Ah someone after my own heart.... but I think that Eagle may be right. Unless the quails can put their heads thru the wire the most likely case would be a butcher bird. They can rip budgies thru wire! Also is there any evidence of Rats? They will eat birds in their cages too.

I have found that Rats normaly drag the dead bodys out of the cage and eat them else where !!!

our aviary doesnt have wire down the bottom, its tin from the ground up to about half way and then its wire, it wasnt a bird or a rat...if it was a rat i would've found the remains of the rat...my mums dog loves to eat them it has to be a cat

That is the reason why you should have only one pair per avairy... Or only one male per avairy...

I prefer to put 1 cock to 2 hens that way the aggression is split between 2 hens and there is less chance of them dieing at the beak of the cock (As you saw bubbles at my place )

Holly I highly recomend getting quails as the eat the left over seed that falls on the ground and they dont cost you anything to keep and its nice to see them in the bottom of the aviarys If you put 1 cock to 2 hens they should be fine

hi there i had 1 cock and 3 hens and the other day i woke up and the male had killed one but at least i got the 2 females i suppose so it workis out. Is it normal though for when the male kills the female that there are no feathers left at all from the bottom of the neck to the head. That is how i found my female
