We are thinking of getting a hand raised major mitchell to try and fill the void that bill has left behind. Does anyone know whether they are good pets?

Bubbles I found some info on them at this site www.birdsnways.com/mowen/major.htm. I have no experience with them at all so I can't help with your decision. I would recommend you spend alot of time with several bird before you make a choice. Let the bird choose you. I am sure you will find a wonderful companion. The Major Mitchell is a beautiful bird. I have heard they can get a little narky in breeding season. But i believe that has to do with how well you handle and train your bird.
If they are anything like a sulphur crest then i would say......................GET TEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Bubbles - I have always heard good things about the Majors as pets, however it is the same with any bird - regular interaction and contact, etc and has their off days, etc. The biggest thing I guess is their noise - but that is the same with any native cockie and it's mainly dawn and dusk. Like John said - I would just go have a look at heaps of birds and let one pick you!!!

I have no experience whatsoever with Major Mitchells, but from what i have heard, they get extremely hormonal during breeding season. They can take out their frustration by killing their mate, or harming their owner It's up to you, but if i were you, i would rather keep my face the way it is

We read up and decided a major mitchell isnt for us As they can get so aggressive and i get very upset even when one of my birds hisses at me so i dont even want to think about one trying to kill me, although it has happend before. i got attacked by our friends nanday!!! But then again she hates everyone except her owner
