We never used to, but recently we try to do this 95% of the time. Unless we already know the people, I dont like just anyone sticking their noses around. if they seem nice and ask to view the aviary I will let them in, but not with out secretly making our 5 big scary dogs bark like mad and scare the crap out of them first

I've stopped allowing people to come here to view the babies. I didn't want to as I enjoy having the birds out front and talking about them to people. Most are respectful when we say that we don't let anyone see our breeders. Some get really pissy about it but I get to the point where I feel like to telling them to **** off. I use my discretion though and I know I shouldn't play favorites but if you're someone I like then yeah I'd let you see them. However if you're someone I don't then no. Bird Theft is a big problem over here and The lady I had bought my Blue & Gold Macaw off had babies stolen out of her nursery 2 years back. She lost 3 Scarlet macaws. 4 Goffin Too's & a few Bare Eye Corella's I think. I'm biased when I sell too. If I like you then I'm very open to giving a good deal. If I don't care for you I tend hike up the price a tad.

Rude Justin!! LOL. But serious it is a worry and you have every right to disallow people from going over your property. I do not like most people pawing through so I have the birds out the front ready to go.

There's alot of talk about not allowing folks onto your property. Matt's totally right in that you do have a right not to allow folk onto your property. Those will complain but they will just have to deal with it.

I hate the stupid ethnics here who always try and pay you less. Normall I will do deals for people I like, but we always get people who come that are of asian or european decent who, after already getting the birds, give you less cash and say, thats all im paying..........GRRR, makes me so angry. When I was younger I used to give in, but now I dont take that BOBBA. I even once ended up charging a guy more than the original price cause he did that. and once and old slave man started grabbing chicks that weren't for sale and shoving them in his box, so angry, matt told him off..........

It's like that over here.
One thing that shits me off about people in birds is that there is a lot of jealousy amongst breeders. Most want the best deal that you can give them. Yet are not willing to give you a deal in return. It sucks. Just reminds of who not to deal with.

We used to let ppl in until someone stole a guinea pig!! Why a guinea pig I will never know... she was one of my long haired sows and was such a cutie. Just our luck our dog wasn't at home. No -one can get in if shes there she is a machine when she puts her mind to it. She stopped 4 police officers from going near my car when I crashed it. We have also had people short change us and generally be rude and you are right Peter it often is the people of certain ethnicity.

yeah thats what i figure , looks like i'll be selling from the front verandah from now on , the thing i hate about it most is that people always start looking at everything else i own and it annoys me , i had sumone here the other week to look at a shed and they started checkin out all my birds , then to top it off she rings me a week later to tell me she'd like to buy sum babies ( pieds only but ) and because she had to travel to pick them up could i do her a good deal , i said noway i had to travel for all mine and i never gota discount then just i told her if there was any babies i usually kept what i wanted and then gave the rest to friends , and i had a garage sale the other saturday and the amount of people that asked if they could look at my birds was incredible

My other halfs brother often has a garage sale....or yard sale as they call them here at our place. I usually take the the babies out when they have it here. I shower them in the sun and just let them hang out. People ask if they can see our breeders. Most understand when you tell them that they're on eggs and don't appreciate strangers being near. Others think you're just being an a.s.s. I always have some antibacterial handwash gel which I make them use should they want to pet one of the babies. Most look at as if to say "White Boy, you lost your mind". I get at least 4 calls a week from people locally, who got my number of a breeders website wanting to know if they stop by. I always apologise to them but most just don't get. I tell them the reasons why are: 1) The Security of our birds. Bird Theft is common around here. By openining up and allowing people in your giving people free advertising as to what it is you raise. They can see how you have things set up. See if you have dogs. See if you have locks on your flights etc. 2) Biosecurity. A few years back we had a HUGE scare with Exotic Newcastle Disease. The END outbreak accured in Poultry farms in Southern California. It sent ripple effects right through the state and Southern California Counties from Kern County in Bakersfield to San Diego County 5 hours away down south were quarantined. YOu would face hefty fines and possible jail time if caught taken any birds in our out of the quarantine zone. Taskforces were set up and went door to door. If you live within a 2 mile radius of a poultry farm and had birds outside those birds were considered infected due to the fact that END is a airborne disease that can be passed by something as simple as standing in an affected birds feaces and getting in your car and walking into your own chook pen. So any bird within the distance was euthanized. Most are understanding but some....... You just wanna...... Allowing someone into your nursery too can be deadly. Babies are especially vulnerable at such a young age and if someone were to come in and unknowingly bring an airborne virus in it could pontentially wipe out your babies.

I was shocked, the funny thing was they left behind all the birds and the other guinea pigs. I contacted her and she said it was our fault because we werent there when she wanted to come buy one.
