well I was down the shopping centre the other day and saw a rather large (read "fat") guinea piggy in a cage. I asked if she was pregnant or just fat and was told that they thought she had a week or two to go. Well I couldnt just leave her there to have her babies in a little cage now could I? Well actually that is what I did do but when I got home I couldn't help myself and turned around and drove all the way back. So now I have a very pregnant GP on my hands with no idea what to do. Hopefully she knows it all and will be able to cope. I borrowed another hutch and she is inside the house. I tore up heaps of newspaper and put a box over it inside the enclosed area and she has hid in there ever since. I had to put the food and water in there too as she won't come out into the run area unless I make her when I am changing the bedding. I hope I did the right thing bringing her home but I guess she is no worse off here than at the petshop all on her own. Any advice will be appreciated. I have never had a pregnant Gp before jen

I would have done the same thing. I couldn't have left her there either. Gp's are usually pretty good mothers, just make sure that she gets plenty of greens, (not lettuce or cabbage) and carrots etc also some hay. I usually let a bit of lawn grow long so that I can clip in when there is no other greens available but there is lots of grass coming through around our way now. They also like Tagasate if you have any growing around your area. Some people say to avoid parsley for pregnant sows. What dry food are you giving her.
Does she look in pretty good condition?

Keep up the food and the veges (they need lots of Vit C, so capsicum etc)
They are usually very easy births, and good mothers. Problems can occur when the mother is having her first littre too young or too old. I think everything will be fine though
PICTURES FOR CRYING OUT LOUD JEN!!!!!

She looks quite heathy and gets veges every day and pellets as well, Not sure what brand they are as they were given to me in a container. I would love to take some pictures but don't want to scare her too much. We are not picking her up or anything just leaving her alone as much as possible and trying to keep Georgia from checking her every 5 minutes. She is just your run of the mill brown, black and white GP but I have no idea who the father is obviously. Anyway we are all very excited about the imminent arrivals!

I woulda done the same thing Jen. Good luck with her imminent birth though I'm sure she'll manage pretty well on her own.

Well on the weekend our pregnant GP had 3 babies and they are much much bigger than I would have expected. poor Mummy Guinea Pig! they are all run-of-the-mill GP's and I suppose not much to look at after looking at some of the ones everyone else on here breeds but we think they are adorable. Here is a picture of my daughter holding her favourite one which I think now is a little boy unfortunately.

Haha, they are massive hey, poor sows! Glad all went well and you can sex them very easily from birth! We do of course expect more pictures and are highly offended that only this one has appeared!
