Hi All, My hubby and I are thinking about making an aviary down the side of our house and were wanting to keep small birds (finches / budgies) in it. I thought that it would be a good idea to check with people who know if it would be viable before we start. We have no intention of breeding the birds. Our house is in Melbourne and has an area down the Eastern side of the property measuring about 1.6m wide and 14 m long which we would like to use. The eaves stick out into this area also to provide some shelter. We plan to enclose the entire area. Would this area be appropriate? Also can budgies and finches be kept together in the one cage? or is it best to partition it off halfway down? Anything else we would need to know about keeping birds as pets also? Bekah

If you dont want the birds to breed then that would be fine. but if you want them to breed it would be best to seperate them as the budgies will tear the finches nests up. sounds like a good cage!

as far as i know u cant mix hook beaks with soft bills, im not 100% sure coz iv neva tried it, but im pretty sure you'll end up with alot of dead finches, i dont think its really worth the risk

Well At My mates place (Jason) we breed lots of finches and budgies togerther in the same aviary and they all seem to get along
As for houseing them togeather they should be fine as long as you dont over croud the aviary
P.S. If you dont wont to breed them try and get ALL COCKS (males) st there got the better colouring and WILL NOT breed if you get pairs they WILL always find a way to breed if they realy wont to breed like on the Ground ECT

Hello and welcome! We have kept budgies and finches together many times! Make sure there are no hole what so ever in the aviary as small birds can fit out small gaps! and they will! Finches and budgies eat a similar seed mix, although the finches will require a selection of very small seeds. Buying a finch mix and budgie mix and mixing the two together would provide good food for both. Both budgies and most finches breed very easily if nesting sites are provided, so as eagle has said, buying all males could be the way to go. There shouldn't be any major difficulties keeping these birds, but we will all be happy to help if you have any questions

There should be no problems at all with them being outside all the time, as long as they have shelter from the wind and rain in winter and the full sun in summer. Make sure you buy aviary birds when you do start buying that way you will know they have come from an outdoor aviary and are used to the climatMost finches need a nest to sleep in at night time, so I recommend buying males and then placing nests around that they can build in. That was you wont have to worry about eggs building up.
