I have been breeding for a number of years and just realized the importance of a good drenching bath ! I also feel you must train your bird to really bath and take a soaking. Once they understand, they do make a big mess but so what? They end up with good looking healthy plumage and most wouldn't even think of plucking ! I feel if birds that baths properly they will be far less feather problems? The wild birds come to my bird bath out by the aviary's and I have to change the water every day ! (dirty water) I believe all birds when they prune has some oil to make their feathers water proof. ( gland at base of tail ) So if they aren't really bathing then does the dirty feathers cause other problems? No, bathing isn't a cure all for feather plucking but it may be a major factor! IMO When I say bathing I mean "drenching" the bird until its feathers are totally wet and it will take time for them to dry back to normal. If you want to you can get the same effect in the showers!
Oh Yes, my outside breeders, when it rains in the winter and is real cold? They love to get in the rain and take a good bath. so forget the " they will catch a cold" because they will not. artm

Hi and welcome Artm. Most birds I know love a good soaking bath, and you're right that it makes for a healthier bird when all its plumage is properly cleaned. My lorikeets love nothing better than a dunk in their clean drinking water LOL
