I've always been lead to believe that apple seeds are bad for your fids but I've been doing some research on the red capped parrot as I'm handrearing a baby and it seems one of the ways they get food is that they chew holes in the apples to get to the seeds. I was wondering if anyone can shed any light on the apple seed thing as if they're part of the natural diet should I be feeding them the seeds as well as the flesh.

I have always allowed my birds to eat the seeds as it doesnt make sense that they wouldn't eat them in the wild, but I may be wrong.

Well there is some truth behind the myth that has obviously been blown out of proportion! Apple seeds are known to contain traces of arsenic, but the traces are so minute you'd have to ingest a huge amount for it to have any effect on you. And the affects don't build up over time. Our Rabbit use to eat tonnes of apple cores and it had no effect on her and she lived over 13 years!

Some websites I have read say watermelon seeds are actually more dangerous than Appleseeds because they will actually sprout and grow inside the stomach. I do know that apricot seeds contain more arsenic than apple however when you are making jam it is common to chuck in a couple of the inside soft seed of the apricot as the pectin it contains helps the jam to set so I think we are fairly safe....I hope

They're probably all fine in moderation. Wild birds seem to eat the seeds with no adverse effects that I've seen.
