This can be very confusing. That picture is of a WA shingleback. We do have Western Australian Blue Tounges too, they are similar to Eastern states blue tounges but different scale patterns, they are also much smoother in scale. Those giant black skinks are called Kings skink and are amazing!

John. Have you ever watched gecko's eat & eat & eat! In the nth west before rain & cyclones we always had heaps of flying ants come inside. The numbers were unbelievable, but if we snuck around at night we could watch our geckos eating the ants & literally watch their bellies grow right in front of our eyes!!! Amazing stuff when we were kids, we just loved it. They always left us a nice mess of ant wings to sweep up every morning though. Matt I just googled shingleback & blue tongue. I had no idea they were shinglebacks!! I've only ever known them as blue tongues. According to where I looked blue tongues looked more like skinks (from the picture anyway) & shinglebacks are also called stumpy tails!! So there ya go Jules, you're right

Kim, I will have to pay more attention next time I see one. The are usually running away from us but the are attracted to the light, I guess to catch all the bugs.

Kim I know the feeling! I always knew them as blue tounges while I was growing up, but working at the zoo has made me realise that common names are so misleading! I mean they do have blue tounges, however, so do several other species which is why it becomes confusing. I still call them blue tounges when noone is around, lol.
