does the US believe THEY are right & we're wrong when it comes to our budgies (sorry parakeets!!) There is rarley a dull moment when it comes to the subject of budgie vs parakeet in US forums. They insist they are right, we're wrong about this & the humble budgie is not only a parakeet but the name budgerigar is european for parakeet!! For those not sure of what I'm talking about, ok, the humble budgie as we all know is short for budgerigar. Yes the europeans called it the budgerigar but this was after the aboriginals originally named it the becherygah (sp?) meaning good eating. Now because of the similarity between the 2 names I'm guessing the europeans thought it would be easier to pronounce budgerigar rather than becherygah (I can't even spell it!!), hence the name change. But apparently (according to some US people) parakeet & budgie are the same & budgie is a european name for parakeet (that ones new to me). No matter how much you try & explain the full meaning & history etc...they are still right!! grrr

you are right! The name budgerigar comes from the aboriginal word meaning good eating, and is a european version of the word! That is the correct and original name for it, but some where alone the lines the name got changed over seas!

That's just typical Yanks for you! Didn't you know that they can do no wrong and everyone else just don't exsist in their lunchbox. I think Most aussie's in the bird world know where budgies got their name from but the yanks will make up anything they want to suit them. Take the Galah, or some other aussies call the pink and grey. I have known them all my life as a galah but for the yanks that name is demeaning or something so they call them the rose breasted cockatoo! WHY, cause they will and can

Parrots are stocky birds with short tails Parakeets are slender birds with long tails Why would the Budgie be known as a Parakeet when other birds like Ringneck, Cockatiels, Lorikeets are all Parakeets as well It is ridiculous

Same here, but what would we know!!! Anyway I seem to be getting through in some way because when ever I've disputed this sort of thing on other forums I've always backed myself up with the facts & history of parakeet budgie & it always seems to stop them in there tracks. I did get annoyed in 1 cockatoo forum some time ago. All I did was asked why they call them that & we call them this.....with all the different names. That started a few people basically telling me that what they call our birds is the correct name for them because it sounds more appropriate for the bird. My main question was about the galah being a rose breasted too. I was told by them galah was a rather demeaning word & rose breasted suited it better, well THAT felt like an insult to me! I had only just discovered at that time what the rose breasted too was, I had no idea before. Well I'm sorry but it's a galah & that's that! I don't find the name in the least dimeaning. There is also alot of US websites on the bird & they appear to have the meaning & history of the 'galah' wrong also go figure.

LOL I know what you mean. I had a few problems saying Too in other forums & I'm sure I was annoying them by saying cocky. But I refused to call the galah a Too (even though it is one) to me it's just a galah. I'm sure it doesn't get offended by it's name.
