Sorry to hear about your bird. I would shoot the cat with a water gun when you see it in your yard. I am not sure it will help to drop a letter to the owner but it's wotrh a try,

oh no!
Call the ranger! The owners of the cat should not let it wonder around like that! It is their responsibility to keep it inside and safe! If you can catch it, maybe then do a letter drop and say "I HAVE YOUR CAT, COME AND GET IT" that way you know who it is, and can tell them in person to keep it locked up.

well we dont know who owns the cat!!! it doesnt have a collar and we have never seen it b4, i did the letter drop and our next door neighbour who has 3 cats was very concerned that we thought it was her, even though i know she keeps her cats inside and is now giving us her budgie to replace the one we lost....now to find the owner of this big black cat

Maybe it's a stray? I'd say catch it and send it to the pound

I wouls also recommend catching it and taking it away, if the owner wants it they will check the pounds and pay the fee to get it out, maybe that will make them keep it inside from then on. I hope you can figure something out soon.

i think i know who it belongs to now... i saw it sitting outside one of our neighbours front doors and earlier that day when we through the yellow pages at it, thats the direction it ran....none of their cats have collars....

I hope u get it Bubbles... My neighbours have cats and don't lock them inside and of course they come in my backyard... if I catch them, they are going straight to the pound... Grrr.... I am sick of it...

I'm sorry to hear that. How did he get your bird? Was it through the wire?
This is a tough one for me. I have 3 cats and heaps of birds so in a catch22 situation. My birds aren't phased by my cats because they are used to seeing them around and I guess thats how I feel it should be. Don't get my wrong ... I know its a nusience ... but when other cats come in my yard my birds aren't phased and carry on as they were so I find the cats tend to lose interest quickly because they aren't all fluttering around and causing a scene.
I don't want to upset anyone because I know this can be a very sensitive subject - but I guess I feel its better to find a reasonable solution rather than an unrealistic one - even if you get rid of the black cat there will always be another cat around the corner.
Is there something you can do to your aviaries to prevent the cats getting to them. ie ... was it through the cage wire that the cat got your bird? Around the bottom of the cage? Can you perhaps put some shadecloth around the bottom or another row of wire?
I know you shouldn't have to rearrange your things because of someone elses cat - but like I say ... better to find a solution that works in the long term.
Sorry again to everyone getting upset reading my post.

Oh thats good to hear. I do agree with Sparkles on what she said as well, but sometimes you have to be mean to get people to listen. So maybe the threats worked then!
