I have a male budgie - 8 years old. His crop is massive as if he is unable to clear the food from it. Any suggestions of what I can try?
thanks
Helen

i sometimes come across this problem with my chooks- when it happens i try to massage the blockage out, just by gently massaging the crop to see if it empties- sometimes it is caused by a peice of long grass or fiborous material blocking the crop- im not sure how to go about it with a budgie but i think itd be sort of the same. better wait until someone more knowledgable come along but!!
otherwise you may need to take a trip t the vet

sorry, cant think of what you could do exactly. I would probably try draining the crop with a crp needle, but would most likely be impossible to do if it is a solid mass, then rinse the crop with a solution of water and a tiny bit of bi-carb. But please do not take my word for it, probably contacting a vet would be best if it is possible for you to do so.

Unfortunately he passed away last night. He seemed to be doing well, the crop was going down, then last night I heard him cry out and he had fallen from his perch. He died shortly after.
I lost one last week without any indications that she was ill. I got them (all except one, who is one that I bred) 6 years ago from a breeder who had to get out of it for health reasons. So I estimated that he was 8, my vet thinks he was quite a bit older, so they probably all are. I only have 4 left now.

Unfortunately you seem to go through times like this when you have pets that are getting old. I also lost one of my fish yesterday. He was a huge catfish named Elvis who lived on his own because he ate everything that moved, he was at least 8 years old. I now only have my 2 axolotyls named Peppi and Pino who are also 8 years old.
