A friend has a weero that landed in their yard last year. Since they couldn't find the owner they've kept her & have no clue to her history. 2 months ago she developed down on each side of her tail & it's rather large & attached to her. Apart from this she appears her usual self. I'm just wondering if anyone knows anything about this? I'm also wondering if it's possibly a genetic thing with her? Thanks

I haven't seen that before. Hopefully some one else with more bird experience will have an idea.

Hi Kim! I have no idea about the down, I have had a quick look in a few books but couldn't find anything! It is possibly a genetic thing or maybe an age related thing? I will let you know if I discover anything.

That is odd!
Is it still there? It isn't loose down that has gotten stuck?

Hi this is Nikki here. new to this site but when I saw the pictures I knew that I had seen it before. In the book "A Guide to Cockatiels and their mutations as a pet and aviary birds" by Dr Terry Martin and Diane Anderson there is a picture of this exact feathering and they say...That it is a result of poor Preening by the bird. They are specialized feathers that grow continually. As they grow they tend to wear and form the white powder that when spread thru the rest of the feathers makes them shiny and water proof... The bird in the photo had accidentally got its head closed in the door damaging the beak severely and therefore effecting grooming and so they continue to grow. So I would look at the birds grooming habits and see if it is able to do it properly.... Hope this helps

Wowww thank you Nikki for that info. I had 4 baby werrios hatch in May and when they started to feather up I noticed a patch of white on each side and the feathers were funny looking but they have not grown like the bird a the start.

Glad I could help. Let me know if it is preening properly and see if you can figure out why it isn't. I love that book read it cover to cover. Cockateils are my life at the moment and I love hand rearing Also got two Border Collies for if I get bored . Will keep in touch....
