Well, before you read the rest of this, you must keep in mind the fact that I AM studying vet at uni! Well, last night for some unknown reason one of our female guinea pigs died.... she was our best one too. Anywho, I was curious to find out what had happened to her, and to see why her stomach had gotten so big very fast (we had put it down to being pregnant). So, I christened my new disection kit, and gave the little girl an autopsy. I discovered that! she was a guinea pig........... but not only that, that she was pregnant with 2 little babies (about 1/4 along i think, fully developed, but still quite small and no hair), and that she died from a twisted bowl. part of her small intestine had swollen to about the size of a toilet roll round! may the little girl rest in peace, and help the tree grown that provides shade for her little friends. and may the rest of our little guys have untwistable bowls! (ps. hope this doesn't sound too sick! I found it very interesting, however would rather have her back with her two bubs!)

Sorry to hear that she died Peter. Sounds like there was nothing much you could have done anyway if the bowel was twisted.

That's a sad thing to hear but it's great you have the guts to disect her! Many would have put it down to pregnancy problems (I know I would have!) But to hear that it wasn't.... well it can't be prevented and I doubt anything could have been done, but at least you know!

Yeah, Poor little thing. If I was a qualified vet perhaps I could have done something, but until then there is no way I can afford to spend $1000's on sick guineapigs. The worst part was that she showed no sign of being in pain or sick? ?? I Have been taught at uni and high school how to disect things properly, and you always lear so much from a disection. I have got a fetal piglet and a bovine leg coming up, amongst other things in the next few weeks.

Sorry to hear that, Peter. And I don't think it's sick, how else do you learn from these things.

Hey Pete - sorry to hear about your little GP.
I don't think there is anything wrong with it either. How many times do you lose a pet and never end up finding out what was exactly wrong with it. I would rather have a vet looking at my pets who has the same natural curiosity as you than one who just learnt from books!
