ive just got an aviary and while i was cleaning the pig cage out instead of putting them in their playpen on the grass i put them in the aviary... what im wondering is do they dig...i want to be able to put them in there for longer instead of having them in the playpen and needing to sit and babysit them..the aviary is sitting on grass with no wire on the bottom. i cant leave them alone cos i have cats but leaving in them in the aviary would keep them safe from the cats...

Some pigs do dig, mainly because there is little hiding spots but very rarely. Maybe keep a regular eye on them to make sure they don't and if you see signs that they do, re-build the bottom of the aviary. You can bury wire down a couple of feet in the ground or cover the bottom with wire.

I had my piggies out on the grass one day. In a divided cage, I had 2 boars on one side and two sows on the other. When I went to get them, I found that the boys were in with the girls as they had dug underneath the dividing wall. So the answer is yes, they can/will dig if they want to but it doesn't happen very often. If you are only leaving them in the aviary while you are cleaning out the cages, they should be fine. Put a cardboard box in there for them to hide under as an added distraction. Just cut a couple of "doors" in the box and they will play in it.

We had them in the bottom of our aviaries for years, and they never once dug out or at all, but we had all males, so I do not think they had the "urge" to dig anywhere!

I had a female who was a little horror She loved the "grass is greener on the other side" phrase and always put it to practise. She would dig out just to eat the grass that wasn't in her pen!

thanks all for the info...they are male and female so i cant really see why they would need to dig out of it..although his a horny lil devil (typcial male) and she might wanna get away from him cos she has a headache (typical female) but will see how we go..the box idea is great ty and i might get some pvc pipe for them too...i also think Mrs who i only brought the other week cos the last Mrs died is preggers...thank god i have a spare cage..heehee..
