All weekend we were waiting for our pet cream guinea pig to give birth. She had been ready for days, so we were waiting for her to drop any second. Finially, after a long wait, she gave birth while we went out on sunday night for about 2 hours. First thing I did when I got home was check her, and what did I see. Laying outside on the cold cement floor was one dead baby(white) and not far from that another one (cream) who looked dead at first, but was moving it's mouth spazmotically every few seconds, gasping for air.
My first instinct was to put the poor thing out of it's missery, however, I hate giving up with out a fright. Mum was inside the actually shelter with a third cream baby, which wasn't looking too well either. I picked all three up (even the poor dead white one) and Mum and brought them inside and started warming them with the hair dryer as they were freezing. The one that was with it's mum soon recovered fully and was back inside next to the heater in a box with her. The almost dead cream one was starting to move. So I got my dad to run a warm sink of water (perks of doing vet at uni, you pick up little tricks, heat is absorbed and lost faster when in water than in air, so if the water is warm, it'll warm the body faster than the same temp. air). As the second cream was starting to move more, something else surprised me! THE WHITE ONE MOVED IT'S MOUTH. This poor thing looked dead, wasn't woving or breathing, and I am not sure why I didn't just leave it to focus on the other two. Lucky I didn't. Anyway, both the white and the cream had a nice warm bath, then were dried, and most amazingly have made a full recovery! It truely was a miracle, you have no idea how close to death (or perhaps even dead, I am not sure lol) these bubs were.
Here are the little guys getting warm and dry after their nice warm bath.
