I'm having a bad run with my little guys at the moment. This little canary has been hopping on one foot for a few days now and I finally caught him and have tried to get a clear pic on what has happened. The lower part of his leg, I think, is pretty much dead. Half way up there looks to be a cut right round and it is bleeding a little - but the bottom half looks like it may just fall off. I honestly don't know what happend to him. I will say though that it was the leg he had his band on - whether that got caught or something. i really don't know. Can anyone suggest something to put on it to stop infection. He is still getting around fine as it is and doesn't appear unwell so I'm pretty sure he will survive.

There is a product you can buy for animal wounds...centrigen I think that's what it's called. it's a pink antibiotic spray mainly used on larger animals for their wounds. The limb doesn't look crash hot but if the canary is acting ok and still eating/drinking then that is a good sign!

BETADINE is good for ANY cut / wound. Check the leg ring isnt still on the leg, or may some string. it could be restricted and cutting blood flow

I think something has wound around the leg and cut off the blood circulation, possibly the leg ring. I would cut anything off if it is still there and then wash it every day with betadine or some other solution to stop infection. It might help to put him into a smaller cage and treat him from there so you dont have to catch him in amongst the other birds every day!

Cool ... yes I put him in a small cage last night. He still seems happy which is good. I just cant believe how quickly it all happened.
Do you think the "dead" part will eventually fall off? You can see at the joint where it is healing so i would have thought so?
