I was sitting on the lounge today & I watched a MOUSE!! Come out of my heater & head straight towards Eddies perch! Grrrrr
Every night when Eddie has gone to bed I make sure every bowl on the perch is emptied & on the sink & clean the flooring, chuck newspaper out etc...I always make sure there isn’t an ounce of food anywhere to be found on or near his perch. I don’t want that rotten vermin & it’s tribe coming in every night. YUCK!! Now I've been doing this since I had Eddies perch up, mainly because he's really messy but obviously the mouse knows there's food there. Is there anything else I can do to keep the mice away? Anything I can do with the bottom, Eddie never goes to the floor. Thanks

I've found all you need is the smell of a bird to atract rodents...they'll come even if your so very clean and only have one bird!!!

I do...that's the problem with rental houses, you know where they're comming from but you can't do much about it. If you do you may be liable to fix what you've "fixed". they come in from behind the stove... there is a huge hole in the wall! I also have rats ( phobia of mine, rats!) and they live in the pigsty two doors down!

I had a mouse problem in my nursery aviary I got a couple of bags of eucalyptus mulch and laid the floor of the aviary with the mulch. I went from having a mouse problem to no mice at all over night, it worked for me. ;D

Amanda, you could try stuffing the hole with plain steel wool (available from hardware store in large skeins). The mice won't gnaw at it to get through the hole. I had mice getting in through the small hole around the water pipe under the sink and that's what I did and it worked.

Amanda try and get rid if the mice befor you block up the hole as it will stink the house out if they become traped in the walls and die then you will have a huge problem !!! try an exterminater and see wot thay say first !!!

we always have mice, but our cat and jack russel keep them at bay. We also bait them, and change brands of baits every few months. Everytime we change more die (must get used to one and not the other) we have tried everything...............

I will try that steel wool jobbie under the shower...the rats sit there and make the most terrible noise knawing the wood along the pipe. They have other ways to get in and out of the wall.... that's how they get into my home. I'm no fan of baits or poisons...... I've seen them carry them into aviaries and cages before.

This happened to us once when we had rats in the roof and we used poison. Several of them must have died up there & in the wall cavities (sorry ratties) and the stink that came into the house was horrendous for about 2 weeks and then it went away. Here's another one. To deter rats & mice, place several drops of Peppermint Essential oil on cotton balls and place them at problem locations (like in your pantry).

Eucalyptus mulch eh? I have plenty of tree's out the back so I might try & lay some fresh crushed leaves around. I have eucalyptus oil too. Actually I wonder if I wipe the floor with Eucalyptus oil when I clean it, it might help? I'm in a rental & I have mice problems but I know bought homes do have the same problems. I don't think it has anything to do with cleanliness, mostly it's the area you're in & the age of the house. My house is spotless but it's very old. The area I'm in is also pretty old. It's where the old Italian market gardens used to be (some are still here). I also live in Freo area so that's just an invitation in itself to have mice & rats around. We've always had mice in the back yard but this is the first time I've seen any inside.

Hey Kim - I don't know how much help I could be. I have 3 cats and believe me they get all the mice - which is a huge bonus because my eckies live inside and throw food from one end of it to the other.
You know what I do have though and that is a bug of some sort that comes out every night after we go to bed and crawls around under the eckies play gym. How do I know this? Because it leaves a "snail trail". Honest to god - its that shiny slimy trail. I have NO idea where this thing lives - there is no where in the lounge it could hide - I have turned everything upside down looking for it. Plus not sure what it is - must be a snail or slug. Either way it irritates me because the morning sun catches that section of the floor and all I can see is shiny snail trail!
What do you guys thing it could be?
