I just read such a sad story about some birds which had received teflon poisoning. I don't know very much about birds (though I find them interesting) and i was quite surprised to see that something as common as teflon cooking equipment could be hazardous to our feathered friends. I have the link to the site with the story below: www.parrotparrot.com/birdhealth/kola.htmI'm not sure if this is factual but if it is it is very sad and i just thought it would be good to share the story and hopefully also the knowledge of this potential hazard...

Its a hard one - I know people who have one pet bird who lives in the house and is exposed to all the elements (teflon, airconditioning, bug spray, etc) who are very much alive and well and have been for quite some years. I myself in the early days never used to worry about such things - however now I have birds worth many hundreds I'm much more conscious.
Sometimes you have to wonder if perhaps some birds are more susceptable to such things than others - as with humans!

I knew about teflon so I'm more cautious of anyone cooking in my home It's amazing what you expose YOURSELF to before your thinking of others such as babies or pets! My father use to spray for bugs heaps when I was a kid and I'd be forever covering my fishtank and blocking the gap under the door so the spray wouldn't come in. I don't own any form of pesticide... very little sprays etc because of my fish in particular. I have to be careful of others spraying herbicides and pescicides in their yards (they always seem to choose windy days too) because of my pets, Scorpions are very sensitive to stuff like that

Teflon is actually only dangerous to birds if you burn the the pan. When it's at it's very highest heat & burning, that's when it lets off highly toxic fumes, not only dangerous to birds but to everyone. I use 1 teflon pan, but my birds aren't in the kitchen at the time & I cook on low heat (that's the best way not to burn, & watch the cooking) if you are a pot burner stay away from teflon!! but most people stear clear from it just to be safe.

I never actually knew that - I assumed it was all heated up teflon. So basically if using the sandwich maker, omelette maker, etc its pretty much ok. My guys don't reside in the kitchen either and i have always moved them outside if cooking something other than vegemite on toast (which is my usual dinner) but the other day I fired up the bbq outside and then thought bugger - it has a non stick coating on it so must be the same sort of thing.
Think I will stick to vege on toast - the birds seem to love it!! hehe
