Hi Chris. I just bought my daughter her first tank and now we're deciding what to put in it. I've heard good things about the oscars. I'd love to see pics of yours.

I'd love to see pics of yours. oscars are great fish but i wouldn't suggest them as a first fish they are very difficult to look after. and can be very aggresive. if you do want to own one though. make sure you have a lage tank. (minimum of 50galons). they grow very lage very quick. as i said my female is 25cm and is still not full grown. you can train them jump out of water but be carefull they have a front and back set of teeth. whitch are quite sharp. my smaller male has bit me twice one time he left me bleeding a little.

Oscars get quite big (around 45cm and can weigh 1.6kg) and really the bigger the tank the better (minimum 200 litres). They are 'dirty' fish and a good filtration unit is highly advisable. They are also tank decorators...thy will move substrate and anything else they can, even if you decide it looks better 'just like so' *LOL*
I certainly wouldn't class them as difficult to look after...they are reasonably hardy fish. I wouldn't class them as overly aggressive either, naturally if housed with smaller fish it will eat them, but then so will many other types of fish. If housed with same size or larger they tend to be quite docile.
The 2 i had were beautiful...they used to come to the top and let me stroke them, they would also swim through rings for food....Oscars will do prettywell ANYTHING for food *L*
