hello everyone my king parrots are moulting, and the hens go in and out of the box. how does this work? i know that in birds its either moult or breed or moult then breed but ive never seen moult AND breed I've had no experience with the King parrots but all my south american & african birds here breed and then in the summer go through their moults. Some will moult out later in the year as I've a few pairs that breed late spring/summer. Moulting tells me that that particular pair is done for the year. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Is the hen a flighty bird and go into the box when you approach the cage?

It might be that she just feels weak from molting and feels much safer in the box

could be, but shes a huge bird and the aviary position is very very private, theyr fed on cellery, bokchoy carrots, capsicum, apples and corn if that helps

Is this her second breeding attemp this season? She may have already bred, and her body has started to moult after breeding the first time, but she may want to breed again. Our crimson wing laid a second clutch after she started moulting this season, but never sat on them.
I would suggest removing the box. The extra stress of both breeding and moulting at the same time may cause complications with the bird and a possibility is death from the stress.
Your doing the best thing by providing a healthy diet for her. I think you just a keen breeding bird who is wanting to breed now, even though it is also moulting season. I have know one pair of eastern kings to do the same thing every year, and rear 2-3 clutches, the last one or 2 whilst moulting, and have never had any problems.Just be mindful of stress to the birds

the cocks started moulting too and do they usually look this scruffy? he looks like his been plucking but ive never seen him do it

They can get really scruffy if they're going through a heavy moult.
