I am looking at freighting some birds from Qld, NSW area... Over there anyway... Do you need a license to do this? If you do, where can I get it from... And any other information would be great too. Thanks... LB

Try the ag department or DEC (calm).

I tried the CALM website but there is nothing on there... Hate it when you do research and can't find the info...

Yeah, you need a licence for the birds you intend to import (if they require one!). The guy from the AG Department has to be there to take pictures of the bird and check the quarantine, so they throw out all vegetables and fruits and seeds. You also have to take the bird out of the freight box into an aviary sometimes (I did) because they have to take clear photos to identify it. Then you have to ring DEC (CALM) and check its all ok about a week or so later. Call up DEC and talk to someone in the licencing department, they make u pay about $10 for the import permit I think, no matter how many birds come over at once.

Doesn't it depend on what birds they are? When I got those Weero's flown over I didn't have to do anything! I didn't need a licence, and no one needed to come out to check them before I picked them up from AAE. All I did was phone someone and ask ... but who .... ummmmmmmmm .... can't remember! But there is an "exempt list" which contains all the birds you can fly over without needing to be checked. Any room in the box for an African Grey ....

Hmm, I am not sure, I thought the whole idea was to check them all because people were listing the species as something it wasnt? Meh, you may be right then, I am not sure, I would still call DEC incase!

All birds on licence require Export permits from the state their coming from and import permits from the state their going to priour to shipping if the bird is Exsempt then you do not require a permit
This is my understanding of N.S.W , QLD and WA Laws

What about birds on the CITES list in Australia? Are their many species that require federal permits to cross state lines?
Here in the States, Golden Conures, and a few Amazon Species that I know of require federal permits. You can sell them within the state you live in but cannot take them out of state without the permit - although I'm 100% sure that it happens on a daily basis.

In WA alot of the "potentional" dangerous birds at risk of becoming feral that are not already in the state are banned! ie african greys etc....bulldust ! My understanding of the process is that you have to contact whoever it is and make them aware of what birds u plan to import/export when and what flight etc. if they come at night time they have to stay there until someone inspects them. People have tried smuggeling african greys over saying they are weeros or gang gang cockatoos. it is kinda hard to tell in those freight boxes. so i am pretty sure with wa's tough laws u have to have all birds id'd

LMAO PETER.... an African Grey a threat... Greys are so smart they need to think about everything and most are terrified of new environments. Sucks that you all can't enjoy them. Maybe someday soon I'll move back. I know when I do I want plenty of pairs of Greys.... Y'all get a discount lol
