If anyone in WA is trying to get a license(s) for their birds, then here is the link:- www.naturebase.net/mailbox.htmlJust fill in your details and in the Comments/Enquiry part and ask them to send you the paperwork for a license for your birds. Enjoy. LB

Another note on licences... CALM is way behind in issueing licences. I posted my renewal off on the 16th of december and still hadn't heard anything back so I rang them on the 22nd of February and the guy went and found my application and put it on the top of the pile. I received the new licence on the following Tuesday so definately worth giving them a ring. Also I was annoyed with all the different licences coming up for renewal at different times so they let me wait and do them at the same time so now they are the same. The direct number for the Bird Licencing department in Perth is 08 9334 0441 so you dont get stuck on hold for ages too.

Well exotic parrots kind of suggests parrots not native to Australia so perhaps we should clarify this. You dont have to worry about the more common types such as budgies, cockatiels and galahs etc although even some of our native cockatoos including pink and greys do require a licence once you get more than a certain amount (4 I think) All the exotics like Indian Ringnecks etc do need a licence though. Another point is that even the natives like red-rumps etc need a licence and you will have to have your avairies inspected by CALM. The exotic bird licence is actually free. The australian licence is only $10 and again you have to have avairies inspected. Advanced licence for Eclectus and major mitchells etc is $20 and if you want exotics like moustaches its $30 WA has the toughest laws in Australia and there are a lot of birds allowed in the eastern states that we are not allowed here. Swan Valley birds have a copy of the licence form from Calm on their website which you can print off, I hope they won't mind me putting a link to their site here but it is so much easier than trying to get it from CALM I think www.swanvalleybirds.com/index.htmJust click on the permits tab at the top of their page.

wow. what is the point of a license? is it to regulate how many birds there are in WA? or to ensure they are taken care of properly?

It is more likely that the licence system is so DEC can keep records of the location of many captive birds in the state. They rarely inspect aviaries or checkup on actual species held, there are too many birds and not enough staff at the department for that!

swanvally birds might be a good place to look for a handraised bird. I went there last week and they all look pretty good.

All our avairies were inspected for double doors and the correct grade of mesh when we started however we havent been inspected since and have 20 times as many birds now. Swan Valley birds had some conures, cockatiels and lovebirds handraised a few weeks ago but they nearly always seem to have some on the go.

We had a fairly knowledgable guy down here in Albany at CALM and I guess thats why ours were inspected even being over 4 hours from Perth. I think his name is Peter Collins or something like that but he was the full bottle on bird licences where other CALM staff seem to know very little as a rule it seems
