Colourful Parrot is Welcome Pest in Whitby.
They might look pretty and have an endearing name, but Rainbow Lorikeets are not wanted in the southwest.
Residents of the Serpentine Jarrahdale shire have been urged to report the parrots after a confirmed sighting of the pests at Whitby, south of Byford.
Department of Agriculture and Food biosecurity officer Darrly Stewart said Rainbow Lorikeets had been established in the Perth metropolitan area since 1960s but the current strategy was to stop them migrating to the southwest.
"We do not want further populations of this pest to establish outside the city, so it is very important that when birds are found they are reported quickly," he said.
"Lorikeets can cause severe damage to fruit crops. They foul vehicles and outdoor living areas and make alot of noise. They also aggressively protect their nesting sites, potentially excluding native birds."
The Rainbow Lorikeets have a swift, direct flight with rapid, whirring wing beats, displaying flashes of dark green and bright red.
Mr Stewart wanted residents to be aware of the damages these pest birds can cause and to report any sightings immediately to 1800 084 881.
