Ok so there is a farmer next door tht does some embryo transfer in his dorper flock to get numbers up and new blood in without the expense of buying sheep, i go over and help out a fair bit which i dont mind because i love doing it- its really interesting! here are some pictures. oh dont forget to check out the "torture cradles" hehe they dont look very comfy but the sheep are only in them for about 5-10 mins and for most of that they are asleep
The patients - pure white dorper ewes
first the patient is shaved
next they are washed down with antiseptic solution so that they are nice and clean for the procedure
Next they get the anthesetic (spelling??) and go fo the sleep- some of them snore!!
next they have a small incision made (2cms long ussually) and the saline solution is poured into the cavity to stop it drying out inside- the uterus is the pulled up through the gap and is flushed (to remove embryos) with a carrier solution, they are put into a petri dish and examined under a microscope to see which embryos are suitable for transfer
while the uterus is out it is constantly sprayed with the saline solution so it doesnt dry out
the sheep is then stiched up first the muscle/ fat and tissure under the skin is stiched then the skin, the stiches dissolve over time.
this is what the scar looks like after it has healed (this one had an infection so it is a little inflamed )
and here is one of the patients after it is all over
The sheep recover within about 5 minutes and act like nothin has happened, they are given a big dose of antibiotics and also a drug which makes them abort and embryos that are left inside- the drug is given because before they are inseminated the donor sheep are given drugs which cause them to ovulate overtime! they can have up to 20 embryo's flushed! so just to make sure thy give them this drug incase all of the embryos hvent been flushed out- we dont want the sheep having 5 lambs!!
the recipient ewes basically go through the same process expect they arent flushe and the uterus ins pullet out instead a microscope is inserted into a tiny hole and the vet checks if they are suitable to have an embryo implanted- if they are he will instert a needle into the uterus and deliver one or two embryos. some of the recipients wil abort the embryos or the embryos will no take there is ussually a 65%- 70% success rate with the implantation
from this particular flushing we got 105 embryos- which is pretty good since we only did 13 ewes!! not sure on the lambing percentage yet since the recipients havent lambed yet.
the minimum cost of this procedure is wait for it.... $10 , 000 bucks, but it is cheaper than buying 105 stud quality sheep!
