Well I bought a pair of scalys today, i have no idea what came over me but they were just too cute! ;D But I have never kept nectar eaters before so have no idea about them. I quickly bought some of that nector stuff that you mix with water or sprinkle over their food and have given them some apple. I have read they will eat a little seed but not much so I put some in and they enjoyed a bit of sunflower seed. can anyone recommend a good brand of dry mix or something that will be ok for them or offer any other suggestions.. Thanks heaps, Jen

Sheps is a good brand. You don't just sprinkle it on their food you give them a whole bowl of it Jen as well as lots of fruit and some veg. Blossoms such as gum, grevillea, bottlebrush, even hibiscus, rose, camelia are great for them just make sure you don't pick them from roadsides or gardens where chemicals are used. Don't give much seed as their digestive system isn't geared for seed and too much can cause serious damage but a small amount every so often is ok.

Cool Sheps is what I got today in both the wet mix and the dry one and was given the phone number in NSW to get more So I will keep up with that. I Won't give them any seed either, Thanks for that it was just all our books say they do eat small quantities of seedin the wild. They are more work than the "normal" birds but not so bad as the Ekkies require that little bit more attention in the way of fruits etc anyway.
Thanks for your help! I promise I will take pictures soon!

There are a few different brands of lorikeet mixes, try your pet shop or the supermarket often sells it as well, I get mine sometimes at woolworths or big W. And yes fruit and vege, they especially love apples and grapes!!(mine do anyway) I do have a reciepe here for home made mix if you want it. Don't feed them seed as it can actually perforate thier crop which is fatal! No that the commercially prepared formulas for nectar eaters are available they really are no harder to care for than a seed eater. Can't wait to see the pics!!

I hope you can find a good brand of lorikeet mix. I recommend feeding wet mix, dry mix and fruit every day to enhance breeding results! Good luck.

You should Base their diet on Wet mix and leave dry mix on there all the time just incase the wet mix is not enough for them Give them fresh fruit and vedge (Mainly Greens) and they should go down asap
