Actually they aren't too bad.....but the trick is not to just use just shavings...i've found lucerne pellets are the best for mice as there is no mousey smell
I have both the rats and mice on lucerne pellets with only a small amount of shaving for the nest area
The nest area also gets some shredded paper towel and white paper for the rats and the mice get shredded paper towel and cotton balls

i used to breed them. i had ruby (chempain) and peanuts (lack hooded) my 2 breeding females, and dexta (tan hooded) my male i used for breeding. I got some realy cool colours off them aswell. one thing i realy kick myself 4 now is once i bred 2 males both almost pure black with white sox, but at the time i didnt want more males and havnt seen anymore like that since. But as soon as i get more rabbit hutches im planning on trying 2 breed some that look like dalmation dogs and the blues ;D

yeah im not sure if i can get the blues in WA, i think a lady told me once that she breeds them, ill have 2 ring her and find out, but if not i think i might have to frieght them in. And there are the dalmations in australia trust me i knew a breeder in perth, ill have to dig around for his number tho. He didnt breed them on purpose either, he breeds them for snakes and didnt realy care wot type they are but i just bred them coz i love the babys, i love the way the used 2 run over to the front of the hutch 2 greet me ;D the hardest thing iv eva done was handraise rats! 2 litters aswell my mum didnt know wot was going on coz i came home with baby milk. There were the cutest babys ever! and i only lost one wich was the runt, i was so upset coz i wanted 2 keep him aswell Ok, well i now officialy miss having my rats, as soon as i move back up 2 perth and start working with my old boss again im gonna start breeding! so lots of photos ;D

yeah its realy sad, wen i used 2 work at the petshop ppl used 2 try and buy my babys 4 there snakes (wich is the main reason i got out of breeding them in the end) and i used 2 get soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo extreamly P'd off!!! i used 2 have a go at them and tell them if i caught them trying buy them again i would report them coz its illegal But if i start breeding again im gonna sell them privatly. i wouldnt sell them 2 anyone i dont trust. out of all the pets ppl can own rats r my fav, they make the best pets i recon! my boy dexta used 2 follow me down to the park (running behind me) and he used 2 sit on my shoulder wen i went jogging or riding, he even came with me 2 school alot of times coz ppl liked him so much. i sold alot of his bubz 2 friends at school ;D

Not illegal that i know of...A pet shop here sells frozen pinkies.....I dont mind them going for snake food, afterall snakes have to eat too. As long as they have had their life ended prior to becoming a snake meal (put in freezer is the most humane). Most snake keepers don't give rats and large mice live to thier reptiles as they will fight back and can injure their snakes.
Though i'll be trying my darndest to keep or rehome as pets all my bubs, only keeping the ones that have the desired colours i want

Some snakes wont take dead feed though...so i understand them wanting live...most serious snake keepers would probably breed their own food i'd imagine
I've never heard of it being illegal to feed live to be honest...

When I worked at a reptile park we used to feed the snakes live mice and rats. Used to give me the creeps, poor little guys. I miss my rat, she was beautiful and so cute.

My sister used to have snakes but she bred her own mice then her hubby would stun them then put them in the freezer. One day my sis went to get out a mouse and saw something move, it was one of the babies they had put in there 2 weeks previous. She ended up keeping that one and breeding from it. LOL
