Well it is that time of year again where we need get everything ready for our birds to breed.
This is NOT an exact guide but this is what I would recommend and what I do every year before the breeding season begins...
STEP 1: Make sure you have a compatible pair for breeding
EG: they will huddle (cuddle) up together and start to feed each other.
Also make sure they are sexed if you don't know the breeder that well or you purchased them from the pet store
STEP 2: Make sure the birds have been wormed with in the last 3 months.
The best time to worm them is early January and late June.
STEP 3: Make sure you put the breeding box in (Late June is a perfect time for this)
And make sure that the box is the right size for the bird you are trying to breed.
If you are unsure which size or shape of box to use just ask us in a post and we will reply to your question(s) (IF YOU DONT ASK YOU DONT KNOW)
Sometimes a pair might like to choose a box for themselves so you may need to put 2 boxes in for some pairs
STEP 4: Make sure you have the right nesting material in the box
(A good all rounder is peat moss and untreated pine wood shavings)
Not too much and not too little around 5-7cm deep is enough and the birds will arrange and sort it as they see fit (if there is too much the birds will remove it themselves)
STEP 5: Keep the food and water up and if you can give them fruit and vegetables as they will love it and use it to feed the babĀ”es.
BUT BE AWEAR SOME FRUIT AND PLANTS CAN KILL BIRDS so if your unsure DONT feed it to them ask us and we will let you know if its safe or not
STEP 6: Make sure you have CALCIUM (cuttle bone) and GRIT (crushed sea shells) available to them as this prevents the birds getting egg bound
EGG BOUND this is when the hen cant lay the egg as it gets stuck inside her uterus it is more common in colder areas but it can happen anywhere and to any one
(EGG BOUND can be FATIL to the bird (HEN) for the novas breeder)
And last but not least DONT check the nest box every day or week as this can scare the hen off the eggs/babies and if you don't have any experience in hand rearing you will most likely loose the eggs/babies
I hope this helps everyone out that needed some information
P.S If I have left anything out please feel free to add
P.S.S GOOD LUCK EVERYONE DURING THE BREEDING SEASON
Thank you Eagle
