Well its that time of year again where we get everything ready for our birds to breed :
STEP 1: Make sure you have a compatible pair for breeding EG: they will huddle (cuddle) up together and start to feed each other .
STEP 2: Make sure the birds have been Wormed with in the last 3 months
STEP 3: Make sure you put the breeding box in ASAP as now is the time. And make sure that the box is the right size for the bird you are trying to breed. If you are un sure which size or shape of box to use just ask us in a post and we will all reply to your Questions (IF YOU DONT ASK YOU DONT KNOW)
STEP 4: Make sure you have the right nesting material im the box (A good all rounder is peat moss and un treated wood shavings) Not too much and not too little around 5-7cm deep is enough and the birds will arrange and sort it as they see fit
STEP 5: Keep the food and water up and if you can give them fruit and vedge as they love it and use it to feed the baby’s BUT BE AWEAR SOME FRUIT AND PLANTS CAN KILL BIRDS so if your unsure DON’T feed it to them ask us and we will let you know if its safe or not
STEP 6: Make sure you have CALCIUM and GRIT (crushed sea shells) available to them as this prevents the birds getting egg bound EGG BOUND this is when the hen cant lay the egg as it gets stuck inside her uterus it is more common in colder areas but it can happen anywhere and to any one (EGG BOUND can be FATIL to the bird (HEN) for the novus breeder)
And last but not least DON’T check the nest box every day or week as this can scare the hen off the Eggs / Baby’s and if you don’t have any experience in Hand Rearing you will most likely loose the Eggs / Baby’s
I hope this helps everyone out that’s need some info
P.S If I have left anything out (the basics) please feel free to add
Thankyou Eagle
P.S.S GOOD LUCK EVERYONE DURING THE BREEDING SEASON from M_Y_Aviarys

Not sure if you guys use Calcium Blocks or not but for those of you who have birds who love Dark Greens, Romaine, Red Leaf Mustard Greens, Collard Greens, Bok Choy & kale are a great source of Calcium.
Also Vitamin A is abundant in the leafy green's mentioned above. Lack of Vitamin A in your birds can comprise your birds immune system and eventually will effect the outward appearence of your birds and make their feathers appear dull.
Eagle has pretty much covered everything we do with our birds.
Good Luck with the Breeding Season down there guys. Our guys are all resting in this heat wave - 6th day of temps over 40C. Gross! In September our Hahns & Blue & Golds get their boxes back and so do the Tiels & Lovies. Our Conures are indoors right now but the Amazons & Caiques will be getting their boxes back then too. Our Senegals & Meyers & Sun Conures will be giving us clutches by the years end if all goes well.

I feed my birds fresh : Apple , Carrot , Orange , Capsicum , Cellary , Bock Choy , Corn , Passion fruit , Grapes and Kiwi fruit every 2 days during breeding season
I also sprinkle ORNITHON on it to give them all the extra vitamins and minerals they need !
If toy have a pair of birds they don't eat fruit (like a pair of nandays i have) you can just add the ORNITHON to there water and that does the job they way all your birds get all of the vitamins and minerals
I just put the ORNITHON in an old salt shaker and sprinkle it on they way !!!

Is Ornithon similar to Spirulina Eagle? I've been lucky that 99% of the guys here eat the fresh stuff. I've got a pair of Tiel that look at it like it's poison I'm feeding them lol.

Spirulina is a kind of mould powder, I can't think of the active ingrediant's right now. i'll buy some during the week and get back to ya on that.
Bee Pollen is something that alot of breeders and feed suppliers are mixing in with the feed too over here now.

With the ORNITHON it is a orange powder that smell like custard powder that you are ment to mix with the water but i just sprinkle it on the fruit and vedge as the birds still eat it and it does the same job

Thanks for posting this Eagle, very useful! I have gotten into the habit of checking the boxes every day even when its not breeding season because it helps the birds familiarise with the sounds and movements associated with nest inspections, that way when I do it when they are nesting they do not resent me as much! So far I havent had any problems, however if I sense that a pair do not like the nest inspection I stop and let them go normally only checking when they are out of the box. I also feed a wide range of fruits and veges in breeding season (more than the rest of the year) and I start feeding sprouts about now to prepare them for nesting, I do not feed sprouts all year round. I recentl;y started mixing breeding aid over the fruit and veg mix, it is a product by vetafarm. Last year and the year before I noticed larger clutch sizes and faster baby growth using this, not sure if it is all due to the breeding aid or because I shifted pairs and started increasing sprouts at the same time. Good luck everyone with breeding season if you keep birds! PS - Jusin, I have heard reports of 22 deaths in USA as a result of this heat wave! I hope people and birds alike are keeping cool, dont worry about your Aussie parrots, they should have the stamina to deal with it!

That is also a great idea for those of us still going thru a drought or if you're really busy of late like me. Vegies are so expensive up here now I've even started giving my guinea pigs nutrigel and di vetelact with bread to give them more vitamins. I really recommend these vitamin products but nothing beats having something different to eat like vegies

The heat is pretty intense out here right now Matt. Sunday is meant to be 114F here. Wouldn't be so bad if it were just plain dry heat but were at here in Selma is really close to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains on the Eastern Side of the San Joaquin Valley & there as has been Thunderstorms in the mountains the past few days and the clouds have been blowing to the west and hanging over Selma & Fresno and the humidity is really bad.
The birds are doing fine actually. I mist them 3 - 4 times a day.
AS for looking in Nestboxes, All ours don't mind us peaking in except for the Green Cheeks. Once I know they're laying I leave them be. They play soccor with their eggs other wise.
