I have a cat too but she stays away from the bird stands. SHe's chucked a big saddy about me getting another bird LOL but she does catch plenty of mice outside. So it's just the one mouse & he hid under the stand today. Gave me a fright when I was cleaning it!!!
Anyway I think the slugs hide a little better than the snails can during the day, so maybe a slug??? I heard that something like wood shavings or any kind of really rough surface will deter them because they can't climb over it.

It def sounds like a snail or a slug! If its going onto the bird stand maybe try putting salt around the edge as they will not cross it and if they try they will get sick and usually die. We have them come every night to try get into the cats food bowl so I have made a salt trail in a semi circle to see if that helps tonight. I know it is inside your house so you probably dont want to lay salt on the floor and make a mess. It seems strange that a snail or slug would come inside but I wouldnt be surprised if it did, its too bloody cold and rainy outside! lmao.

Yeh its so strange hey. Its in the lounge room - on carpet nonetheless - and there is no doors outside from the lounge. It has been doing this for about 2 months now - I can't understand how it could still be alive. I vaccum the floor everyday (not that much ends up on the floor cause i have a really good play gym with seed catcher). I cannot for the life of me find the little bugger. Actually I might put some kitty litter down - someone at work told me that it is a really good natural way to control snails in your garden, etc. Might be good for the carpet. Will let you know how it goes.
Hmmmmm - might have to set up surveillance in the lounge one night .....
I dunno Kim - what else could you try with your mouse? Even though they are little and harmless they scare the crap outta you when you aren't expecting to see them! I could send Lily or Daisy round for you - hehe!! Your boy will start to let you know when he is around - mine squawk if they see a mouse - like they are dobbing on it!!
Good luck - let us know how you go!

Well funny enough I thought Eddie had seen the mouse yesterday. He was constantly staring down on the ground & wouldn't take his eyes off one spot. I looked under the newspaper he was glaring at thinking it might be the mouse, but there was nothing there so I thought maybe he was just reading the paper lmao. Today he didn't care about whatever was on the ground & today the mouse was under his stand! It's doing this during the day!!! with us here!!!! So I dunno....So far it's just 1 mouse. Mine is on carpet too, with a plastic flooring at the base of the stand. Lets just hope this mouse doesn't bring it's rellies in.
Yes salt kills snails. Matt have you actually seen what happens to them when they get in contact with salt? They fizz up & die straight away. Gross!!

Oh Kim I saw it early this morning when I got home about 12 30 am. There were many dead snails and some fresh ones just going over the salt. It was terrible (for the snails), this morning I left for work at 5 30 and there were dead snails there everywhere I threw them away and there was foam all over them. At least the cat has nice clean biscuits now though. Now, onto the rascall of a mouse that has decided to rule your house. One idea is to leave dry potato out and apparently they eat alot of it then when they drink it makes them explode. If you dont like that idea maybe you could go to bunnings or somewhere similar and they have these great live catch traps. They are blue and yellow and kindof shaped with a slight crook so you open up a little door and put food in the back, then you leave the "verandah" on the front open and when the mouse goes in it tilts back and the verandah slams closed. I think I may have just confused you but if you go to bunnings and look you will see them I went to the bunnings on cr of Stock Rd (opposite the Stock Road Markets) and they had them there. It is a more humane weay to trap mice, then you can take him for a long drive or send him off to mouse heaven.
