My budgie has this crusty coral-like thing growing on its body, what is it???Well it is called 'Scaly Face' and is quite often seen on Budgies. If left untreated, it will get out of control and spread to other parts of the body, including the beak, feet, eyes, vent (under the tail) and wings and may cause deformity of the beak and kill your bird! A mite called 'Cnemidocoptes' is the cause of this problem. It lives around the beak, feeds on skin debris and builds up to the coral-like things you see on your bird. To treat this mite you buy some 'Scaly Face and Leg Treatment' from your Vet or local pet shop. I have be told vaseline can do the same thing and I have used it on budgies legs but not on their face, as I did not wish to get it in their eyes and maybe cause more harm to them. To help prevent this from happening in the future, use a Mite and Lice spray on your birds every so often to help keep it under control. Below is a photo of a budgie with scaly face, you can see the coral-like things around its beak and eye. You should be able to see the scaly face before it get this far. I was given this budgie as the owner did not know what to do.

Optimally, your breeder tends a closed aviary. A bird raised in this environment has a lower chance of developing a disease. Many avian diseases travel through the air, so they spread quickly.
If your parrot eats too much protein, he may develop gout. Yes, gout! That same disease that plagues humans when we overindulge in such items as red meat.
High fiber diets have also been credited with helping to ward off a host of degenerative, age-related diseases, including heart disease and cancer. So it’s far too dangerous to dismiss your parrot’s potential need for fiber.
