Well I decided to put some Japanese Quail eggs into the incubator ... and they hatched really well. I got four babies who are now feathering up quite nicely and will be looking for new homes soon if anyone is keen!! My little cinnamon quail pair have been on 8 eggs for a while now and I had no idea when they were due. Well Monday morning I go out to do my morning "headcount" and feeding and the two little budgies left in the aviary were on the ground having a go at something ... upon closer inspection it was a baby quail. There was another one dead also and one half out of the shell dead and pecked (mean lil budgies ) So I grabbed mum, dad, 3 running babies, 1 half in shell still and one unhatched egg and moved everyone to a small cage in the garage. Got home from work that day - two babies are on the ground outside the cage nearly dead - turns out they fit through the bars. Poor little buggers died pretty soon after that. I moved the other two into the brooder and went to put mum and dad back into the aviary. Got mum in, then dad flew out of my hands, and is now living free and easy in the backyard SOMEWHERE! I have a huge block and LOTS of shrubs and bushes. I will never find him again .... I just can't win! Mum is now alone and crying out constantly. I was gonna put her in the brooder so she could be with the chicks but I didnt know if I should. When they get a bit bigger they can go back with her.

Oh poor little bubs. Budgies can be really nasty sometimes. You've had a rough time with the quails except the japs. I'm glad they're doing well.

Awwww don't say that Peter ....
The two left are thriving ... infact the Rhode Island Red chick I have in the brooder has taken them on and last night they were curled up under her wings - it was so cute !!!!!

Thats good, at least they are surviving in the brooder. Did the male ever come back? ours used to eacape and then fly miles away, only to turn up again a day or 2 later trying to get back in with the others. However, we dont have any cats.....
