I want to share a story with you all that ended today...
It all started on April the 15th, 3:00pm (WA Time). I was saying good-bye to a friend as I noticed a white object moving in the grass across the road. When suddenly I realized it was a injury Corella! I ran inside, got a towel, raced across the road and collected the bird.
Josh and I looked him over, there were no injuries what soever but yet he would not fly. We did notice he had a really dirrty bum, so we cut his bum feathers off and cleaned he up. We placed him in a cardboard box, in a dark room to be left alone thinking he would not last the night. He could hardly keep his head up and just wanted to sleep and sleep.
They following morning I checked on him and he was awake sitting at the seed trying to eat it. He was alive but still not flying. He spent the next week and a half living in his box. As he continued to surprize me, one day I found him out and about, walking around the room. He now had the strenght to pull himself out of the box. I was so proud of him that day, I named him "Lucky-Too!" A very lucky cockatoo to be alive.
I moved him into a cage, where he spent the remaining time he had with me. I would let him out daily to stretch his legs and wings, thats when he would flap them anway. Then on the 29th of April instead of climbing out of his cage as he did, he flew out of the cage. Well sort of anyways. He flew to the ground instead of up which he still couldn't do.
Over the week he started to go up and have controll over his flying and I knew it was time to say good-bye. He had come so far and was growing stronger every day. So I wait for the weekend to come knowing it would be his last day with me.
So today I told his cage with him into outside at 5:30pm when all the other Corella are flying pass to go to bed. I open the door just as a small group flew over and out he went and straight up into the sky with his friends and family. I watched him fly away into the sunset, knowing he was free once again and where he should be.
I have no pictures or vidoes to show of him as I never thought he would make it this far. I only have my memories of Lucky-Too but I wish I had gotten him flying free on vidoe. I will never forget him anyway. I now know how you feel Jules when saying good-bye to a friend but you know in your heart it was the right thing to do.
So that is my story. I hope it inspires others to care for their wildlife...
