A friend who owns the farm we are moving to next month rang me on Friday morning to say he had knocked over a dead tree in the middle of the paddock and sadly three little chicks fell out. He changed his mind about knocking down the tree next to it as he saw a bird fly into a hollow in that one too. The bird was described as a green grass parrot but he didn't notice any other colours on them so didn't give me a lot to go on. The chicks are about a week old I guess but in the last two days have started to show bright yellow in the tail and blue on the wings. Does anyone know what they are? My best guess is an Elegant but I would have thought he would have noticed the blue on the adults but then he isn't really a "bird person" Just glad he rang me straight away. I plan to release them back on the farm when they are old enough. They are just the cutest little things and are eating well...Heres a pic!

LOL (Keep in mind gambling is not one of my strong points) But I would deffinately put $100 on the chance they are elegants. However how big are they? Could you give us pics next to a coin or match box? Looking at them they do remind me a little of the 28's I h/r a few years ago. But most aussie parrots look similar as young birds.

Other choices could be Red caps, Regent or western rosella.....

I'd go with the regents only cos of the beak colour and shape. My elegants beaks look completely different, more like the beaks on bourkes. If he said he saw a green bird I doubt it would've been a red cap or a rosella.

I was thinking Regents too but couldn't see enough colour on babies yet to say for sure...

They are not very big babies and kind of seem to be on a par with a baby red rump or a little bigger, certainly don't seem any where near as big as a ringneck chick. I am certain he would have recognised a 28 or a rosella anyway. Anyway they are growing fast so I will give it a week and post some more pictures Thanks guys Jen

Sorry everyone the babies grew up to be 3 lovely little elegants (2 male, 1 female) that we released back into the bush when we moved to the farm. They hung around for a few weeks just to let us know they were doing ok and then disappeared. I am not too worried about them as the elegants around here seem to prefer the other side of the hill to where we are so hopefully they are all still doing well and have joined all the other elegants over there. Wow cool. I didn't realize their beaks started off that colour. That was what threw me.
