I have been wondering if it is ok to give parents with chicks in the nest a little bit of handraising formular every now and then that they can feed to their chicks? I was thinking that the chicks will then have tasted the formular before being taken out for handraising and may not be such a "taste shock" for them. Also give the parents a helping hand food wise. What are your thoughts??

Handraising formula has lots of goodies in it, you can make it up as a paste or sprinkle some on fruit and vegies. It's a great idea!!!

Oh great, thanks for that Amanda. I thought it should have been OK but just wanted to make sure. Think I will give it a go this breeding season. Especially with the Ringies as those babies can be quite hard to please food wise lol

it should not be a problem
We pull our babys at 6 - 10 days of age for h/r and never have a problem converting them to formular

I think this is a great idea! I can't imagine the taste factor would be too important because the parents will be semi digesting it along with other food products, however the babies would definately benefit from the added goodies and if they are taken for handraising then their digestive system will already be exposed to the formula. Let us know how you go getting the parents to take it.

Will do Matt. I have a few IRNs with eggs in nest at the moment. I have found IRN chicks to be the fussy or harder ones to handraise. Hoping this idea will make it a little easier.
