They are cute!
Did they have any feathers on the body before? I would keep an eye on them, just in case mum and dad are "over pruining" them. It might be nothing.

I agree with Peter it looks like mum or dad is plucking there backs as they should have feathers there buy now !!!!!
Dont worry about it too much though they will grow back very soon

Kakarikis seem to grow their feathers different to other birds, our baby was developing the same way ...until the parents abandoned him

They have never had any feathers there yet, so I dont think they are plucking them. Mum has started laying in the other box again!!!

After reading that I went down and checked (even though I checked a or 2 ago, lol)mean while getting wet!! it is raining here!!Bout time though!! Anyways paranoid I went to check and I saw 1 little face poking his/her head out of the nest box!! cheeky little thing! So cute though! The 3 of them are doing well still, dad is doing a great job of feeding them so far, and Mum is on 3 eggs in the other box!! I am wondering if I should bring the box with the babies down onto the ground?? I have heard alot of people do this especially with kaks as the babies get very curious at a young age and fallout of the nest and die. Oh and they are starting to get pin feathers on their backs now to, so no feather plucking going on. ;D

I would say that mum was really itching to start nesting again, so plucked the babies to try and get them to move out of home at a young age. I have never heard of putting the box on the gorund. I personally wouldnt want to disturb the nest that much. We have weeros and budgies fall out of the nest all the time. Mum and dad still look after them on the ground till i come along and put them back in the nest.

They are so cute and good on dad for keeping up with all that responsibility. I haven't had much to do with kakariki's yet but Rob saw some recently at a friends house and has been raving about what great little birds they are. They are the first new type of bird he wants to get as soon as we move and build more avairys. (Tax cheque came to day so he's off to buy a new welder in preparation tomorrow!) Jen

Mum has another nest box to lay in, you need to have two for kakis so they dont kill thier babies to nest again, as Bubbles said previously kaki babies seem to develop feathers differently to other birds, so I dont think they have been plucked. I spoke to another person that I know locally that has bred kaks in the past and she has never taken the boxes down so I will leave them. And yes Jen they are wonderful birds!! And make nice handraised pets also!! I am planning to pull some of the next clutch to handraise!!
