;DI checked the kakas box tonight and there are 2 little hatchlings! Unfortunatly 1 is dead, but the other one is so cute and fluffy!!! Just a question.. should I take the dead one out? Been a while since I have had a dead bub in the box I can't remember what I did. Looks like at least 3 more eggs are fertile so hoplefully all goes well and I get a few more little fluff balls. ;D

Sorry to hear about the little one but I hope the others all hatch safely to join their brother or sister as photographic models.

I removed the dead one today. the other one is doing really well. I will get pics soon, I dont want to disturb mum and dad too much as they are first time parents and get VERY toey when I go near the avairy!! No more have hatched as yet but the eggs were laid a bit apart so perhaps they will be all hatched by the weekend!?

Well Here is a ic of the surviving baby. Dont look at next pic if you dont like dead thing pics When I went to take this pic I noticed another dead one! Must have only hatched today and maybe got squashed??? I am posting a pic of it as well not sure if its stomach area is normal?? Maybe they killed it cause something was derformed? The browny area is very squishy like it is underdeveloped or something???

Great to hear you have one baby doing well! The dead baby looks like it has a naval infection, when it absorbed the yolk before hatching it probaby absorbed some bacteria too and that causes that squishy appearance and it usually smells, I get it in chook chicks too. What colour are the parents out of curiosity? Good luck with the others.

The parents are red fronted, hen split pied, cock pied. I went down and another dead one!!!! I am getting very disapointed!! The one surviving one looks to be doing well.

The reason we wanted to know the parrents colour is that the dead baby is a mutation of some sort. as it has red eyes and white fluff! It could be an "ino" mutation, or a cinnamon, or more likely a pied.

Oh Nat I'm sorry to hear about the dead bubs. Its very disappointing isn't it. I know its just life ... but that doesn't make it easier.

Maybe stay away from the nest for a little while. The parents may be getting upset with the nest inspections, and not feed the young. Don listen to us when we demand photo's lol.
